Segment 1

Segment 1. The View from Abroad. Israel. Abe Katsman

Abe Katsman, RA Israel Legal Counsel, “a Seattle native, a busy American lawyer, consultant, political commentator and writer living in Israel,” speaks to RARadio two weeks before Gov. Romney’s historic and successful visit to Israel. Mr, Katsman comments on his personal background and his involvement with RA Israel and also mentions he worked in DC prior to moving to Israel. He writes opinion columns for the Jerusalem Post, the Israel Times, Front Page and other publications. He comments on the recent visit to Israel by Ari Fleischer, Pres. George W. Bush’s former Press Secretary and the events organized by RA Chairs Kory Bardash and Marc Zell together with the Republican Jewish Coalition’s ED Matt Brooks, who organized the trip. He also explains the initiative (non-partisan) behind the IVoteIsrael website. Why is Israel important in this Presidential election? “A candidate’s attitude towards Israel can be a type of “barometer,” especially when a lot of countries are distancing themselves from Israel…” For Mr. Katsman, any American would feel “at home” in Israel. It is a “free-wheeling democracy, taking free speech to another level…and now is “under siege, in a “tough neighborhood, “surrounded by “militia groups armed to the teeth.” What is at stake ? Its “right to exist,” all the while its neighbors are calling for its “outright destruction.” Mr. Kattsman points to the different attitudes towards Israel from the Israeli nationals, from the Israeli Americans, from the Jewish Community in the US and this Administration…and candidly mentions President Obama’s “pandering to the Arab world,” since very early in his Administration, at the time of the “Cairo Speech.” Mr. Katsman recalls the revelatory “open mike” incident that captured President Obama’s unfortunate comments to former French PM Sarkozy regarding Prime Minister Netanyahu…Mr. Katsman compares the President’s reaction with that of former President Bush, as recounted by Ari Fleischer, when the President corrected/stopped Palestinian President Abbas from berating Israel. For Mr. Katsman, this epitomizes President Bush, who “took a principled stand.”

Segment 2

Segment 2 The View from Abroad. Israel. Abe Katsman

Abe Katsman comments on a primordial “issue” for Israel: Iran’s “nuclear capabilities.” He also speaks of living in Israel, giving his perspective on its history, of a “statist” country, with a “socialist” background and which has changed during the last “20 years of privatization” and” is now experiencing an ‘economic boom and is, in fact, one of the few continuing successful economies…” Mr. Katsman also delves on Gov. Romney’s planned trip to Israel, his personal friendship with PM Netanyahu and notes the contrast with President Obama’s relation with Israel during his presidency… Yes, he was there… in the Summer of 2008… [for a photo opp?]. He also describes the more recent photo opps by Administration officials like Secretary Clinton, Mr. Donilon et.al., who traveled just days before Governor Romney’s visit. Mr. Katsman concludes the interview by acknowledging that “people, here– get it..” For him, Obama’s ME Policy is centered on the “minutiae” of the housing policies (settlement issues), claiming areas for the Palestinians that they themselves have not claimed…” In the meantime, “Egypt has gone [hard line] Islamic” and Libya, Tunisia and Syria are in chaotic situations… For Mr. Katsman, the echo effect of Governor Romney’s visit will have a broader impact, in the Jewish_American community and withing pro-Israeli community which will ultimately influence the vote…
